In New York, iPhones with a total worth of $66,000 were stolen from the Apple Store. The thieves were dressed as staff and in two separate locations the incidents took place. Back in March, the Upper West Side Apple retail store had been targeted where around $50K worth of 67 iPhones had been stolen. Soon after that, there were reports that from the SoHo Apple store, 19 iPhones which totaled to a worth of $16K had been stolen.
It is believed by the police, that the same thieves could be the ones who are responsible for both the robberies. Gizmodo also notes that the research done by the criminals seems to be really good. Their official statement highlights the fact that the thieves knew their way around the retails store. If you take a close look at the way the robberies have taken place, you will get to see, that they were dressed as employees of the store. They also went ahead and opened the drawers where the unlocked and brand new iPhones were kept. You could say in a way, that the location at Upper West Side was said to be a target that was really smart target. This s considering the fact that the employees were trained out here, so it wouldn’t stick out if there was a face that was not familiar wearing a uniform.
IT is yet to be known if fake or genuine shirts had been worn by the thieves. However, last year, there were new shirts that had been introduced and also updated subsequently might have made the ruse easier. Presently, there are different shirt styles that are used. Walking into an Apple Store with such a deception is something that has been done in the past in order to steal iPhones. Back in 2014m a simple yet crazy con had been used by a man from East Tampa and managed to walk ways with Apple products worth $309K.
