Each and every user of smartphones is used to stream videos on Netflix. AT&T and Verizon being the top networks are the network partners the users use to stream in the videos. Many times, the videos appear grainy and of the worst quality. Seeing this, the users usually blame the network and curse them for the poor signal strength they send. According to recent news, the network was not the real reason one saw grainy and low quality videos. According to the Wall Street Journal, it has been Netflix who had deliberately decreased the video quality when viewing from a mobile device.
According to the words of Netflix officials and spokesperson, they have been reducing the quality of videos seen through mobile devices. The reason behind this is that high quality videos may take up more space and can exceed the data cap most networks keep on their services. This is not only for AT&T and Verizon, but also applicable for numerous network services all across the world.
This is something which had been kept a secret for a long time, and would have remained a secret if a network company called T‐Mobile wouldn’t have pushed their new ad boast. According to them, T‐Mobile’s stated that they would be able to provide with better quality videos on Netflix than the two most reputed network service providers around, namely Verizon and AT&T. they also went on into saying that these two companies actually throttled the videos and made the quality low.
On further investigation, both the companies showed enough [proof that they have not made any changes to the video and used the ones sent by Netflix. As a result, Netflix had to own up to the whole event and state why they did it.
