Dispute of Apple ‐FBI Weakened the Encryption Law Political Will

It seems to me that in the U.S. legislation, the support for encryption seems to have flattened as following the way the San Bernardino shooting case petered out, a push for changes is been seen in the federal law. This is the information that was given by sources that are not just part of the tech sector but also there are some that are part of administration as well as the congressional office.

Dispute of Apple ‐FBI Weakened the Encryption Law Political Will

A US federal judge on February 16th had ordered Apple to provide the necessary help that was needed to unlock the iPhone which was owned by one of the shooters named Syed Farook in the attacks that took place in December 2015 which resulted to death of 14 people in San Bernardino. The FBI was not able to hack through the iPhone and wanted Apple to go ahead help them in unlocking the iPhone in question. Apple was asked by the FBI to come up with an iOS version which would not just disable the security features of the passcode; however it will also allow a new set of passcode to be electronically entered which would allow the person to gain access to the iPhone with a brute force. Apple did go ahead and oppose the order that was sent out by the court through an open letter that was written by the company’s CEO Tim Cook.

In the letter, he clearly stated that by adhering to the request that was made by the FBI, it would have serious implications as well as dangerous precedents on the smartphone encryption future. The dispute finally came to an end when an alternative way when the FBI managed to get a third party company to do the job for them that is known to be professional hackers who help out in such matters.
