Avner Ronen, the founder of Boxee has launched the new chat app called Public. As per the description given by him, he stated that this new app acts like a medium so that conversations can be broadcasted. This app seems to be almost on the same grounds as Talkshow which allows the participation of people in small groups in a chat through text messages however the twist here is that the conversation can be followed live by anybody.
In his conversation with Variety, he stated that it has been decades now that the service of broadcast conversations has been around. When you talk about the audio front, it has been though podcasts and radio, while on the video front, you have YouTube and TV. Now as per his belief, the third platform that could be used in this front could be the messaging service.
The launch of Public came along with an app that was for iPhones and the best description that can be given would be having a group chat with an audience. The topic of discussion can be on any front from games to sports to even general stuff. The discussions that will happen will take place in public which means that a person can follow it whenever they want as it will be available later as well as live.
Ronen also stated that the inspiration of the app was the end to end messaging encryption that was present in apps. He stated that there were many apps for messaging in 2015 that were considering the privacy safeguards and considering encryption as a response to the revelations made by Edwards Snowden in regards to the government surveillance. This actually got him to think about coming up with a messaging platform which was secured and open for everybody to see. This is also the reason why he thought of the name Public for his app.
