In recent times, in many of the devices released by Apple has a new type of touch system which makes the use of advanced haptic technology. This particular technology has been used in the touch system of iPhones, with the new 3D Touch, and also Mac Books and iWatches, with the Force Touch. Though it has been an important and a very welcome update to the Apple devices touch systems, it has also pushed the company into several law suits.
As stated by a lawsuit plaintiff, Immersion, each of the models which have used this advanced haptic technology to upgrade their touch system to Force Touch or 3D Touch, is basically infringing on the patent Immersion has on the technology of “Shared Feedback”. Though this patent does not specify how the technology helps the device to analyze the intensity the device is touched with, it does specify the fact that the devices can use soft as well as hard presses on the screen in order to have any kind of preview or specific actions done, respectively.
This is not the end of the lawsuit. Immersion also has accused Apple of violating the patent which covers the methods of how the use of hand held devices with touch screens can provide with “tactile sensations”. In totality, the main accusation on Apple is that Apple is using certain technologies and methods to perform certain tasks exactly like the patents’ state for Immersion.
The main statement of Immersions is that they want to company to flourish in their business and also has no issues if other companies are using the techniques they have developed to make the touch sensation on electronic devices much more responsive. Their only problem lies with the fact that Apple is using the technology as something devised by themselves. Immersion claims that the haptic technology they have developed is already used in more than 3 billion devices by the company, including devices used in not only medical facilities, but also gaming systems and electronics from all across the world.
