There have been many posts and articles you will find about various incidents that have been reported pertaining to mobile batteries bursting due to which a person could either be injured or may also die depending on the impact. Well the Sydney Morning Herald recently reported something on the same grounds however there was no involvement of sledgehammers.
After a minor fall, the Apple iPhone of a Sydney bicycle rider had exploded due to which he was burnt severely. 36 year old Gareth Clear is a Management Consultant at Bondi. On a Sunday afternoon, he had gone for a ride on his cycle and had placed his iPhone inside his back pocket. When he fell down from hi bicycle, the iPhone ignited.
As per his statement, he said that all he could see was that from his back pocket there was smoke coming out, the next he felt was a surging pain and then finally a searing heat. This was when within a few seconds; he saw that even his riding shorts had been burnt through. The Competition and Consumer Commission of Australia is presently investigating this case, however, they did state that such incidents does seem to be increasing and so is the risk factor due to modern designs being so slim which is also in the reason behind such incidents and also in the case of his iPhone.
In their post, it was stated that the slimness and decreasing size of portable devices along with the expectations that consumers have about the life of the batter has actually become one of the challenges that battery manufacturers face. When you talk about significant physical impact, the vulnerability of Lithium batteries is high.
Due to this, the thin separators are more prone to damage which helps to keep the various battery element apart. Clear has stated that he would rather spread awareness about this and does not blame Apple for the injury even though Apple has been keeping a touch with him.
