Apple regulates its reign over the lightning connector through the MFi (Made for iPhone) program on basis of which they permit certain companies to build headphones using lightning connector. But the problem will be solved if a lightning adapter would have been available as it would have allowed using old headphones.

The Development Kit introduced by Cirrus Logic is under MFi program and through it the superiority of the lightning earpods than the normal ear pods is explained.
