Looks like Apple has managed to run into trouble again as the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) of South Korea is presently investigating against the company in regards to the anti‐competitive practises that is going on within the country. The legality of the contract terms between the mobile carriers and Apple is presently being examined.
If this news sounds familiar, well the reason would be that recently headlines were hit when the same situation had taken place in France. Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) in April had a point of argument on 10 clauses that had been mentioned in the contracts that the company had made between them and the mobile carriers were stated to be unfair. This also included the purchase represent that was set on the minimum level over a period of 3 years. Another thing that had been included in regards to the repair cost was the contribution was being made by carriers.
At that point of time, Apple had been ordered by the DGCCRF to pay a sum of $54M or €48.5M which was said to be a compensation that was supposed to be giving to 4 carriers and along with that they also had to pay €8M as a fine amount. Similarly, in 2013, the company had been fined in Taiwan wherein they had go ahead and pay an amount of $666k as a fine in regards to the interference of the price of iPhones.
The details pertaining to the case in Korea is said to be sparse, and as of now, the only that was reported by Reuters was the fact that some matters are being investigated by the FTC which is in regards to the company. There are not many details that have been known on this front; however the one thing that has been mentioned is the fact that a subsidized price cannot be offered by carriers as this is something that is not allowed by the company.
