It has been made very clear by the Indian Government that they are not in favor for the selling of refurbished iPhones of Apple. The reason behind this is because there is no value that is created and secondly it is regard as akin to dump e‐waste.
Apart from the regular itinerary of meeting ministers, and even getting into a conversation with the Indian Institutes of Technology and Management, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple was also seen at the cricket game called the Indian Premier League while being in the midst of the top CEO’s, entrepreneurs and film stars. He was also seen visiting the famous temple of the country during his visit. Apart from that, in order to ensure that Apple’s presence steps forth in the Indian soil, he was also seen sitting down with Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister. Soon after his meeting,
it seems to be that an unsympathetic stance has been adopted by the Government in regards to two proposals that had been put forth by Cook. Not only did he want to set up Apple Retail Stores in the country however, he also spoke about selling iPhones which were refurbished. It has been made clear by the Government that the selling of refurbished iPhones is something that the Government is not in favor of.
Even in regards to the Apple retail stores, the clause of ensuring that at least 30% of their production has to be given to local sourcing was something that they were not in favor of compromising on. Apple has been trying to get an exemption on these grounds with the stands that they have cutting edge technology based products. ET was told by Arun Jaitley who is the Finance Minister of the country that Apple has already been explained that this clause was mandatory for sourcing. This is because the aim is to create jobs.
