After a lot of speculations it has been officially announced by Twitter about the plans pertaining to the length of the tweet. Media attachments and counting mentions are no longer going to be part of the limit of 140 characters. Also part of the latest announcement is the benefit of a person being able to re‐tweet themselves. Apart from that, the ‘@’ has been removed so that the service can be simplified.
All these updates of Twitter are set to come onboard in the months to follow. The changes in the headlines is that now Twitter will not include any kind of media attachments and videos as well as embedded photos as a part of the character limit. This means the user has the benefit of fitting in a lot more content in his or her tweet without worry about the characters being used up. Potential abused is not addressed by Twitter, in their blog post. For example in one tweet the @mention person’s name can be indefinite as there is no limit prescribed due to the fact that the 140 character limit is not applicable for quoted tweets, polls, videos, GIF’s or photos which means that there is more room for words.
It is also believed that the retweet feature of Twitter may also be enhanced giving users the benefit of re‐tweeting the tweets that they have done earlier. As per the blog post, it has also been stated that the “@” convention has been removed which means that the tweets starting like this will only be visible for the recipient and sender. Soon Twitter also has plans to make the new tweets that start with a particular mention visible to all the people who are following it. All the flowers will get to see the replies only if the individual themselves have re‐tweeted it.
