During the time, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook was partying with the stars of Bollywood and meeting The Indian Prime Minister, Lisa Jackson who is the Environment, policy and social initiative’s VP of the company was also in India. As per what was reported by Yahoo India, The executive of Apple was seen visiting rural schools and Solar mamas where iPads were been used to teach.
One of the places that were visited by Jackson during her visit to India was The Barefoot College that is located at Rajasthan’s Ajmer district. In the college, Macs and iPads are used for students even though it is a collage that is rural and is low budget. Earlier in the year, there were 20 iPods that was donated by Apple India for the women who enrolled themselves into the program for solar training; this was reported by The Better India.
In order to teach digital literacy, another 10 Macs were donated by Apple. This is a school that is attended by women generally who want to learn and also enhance the interest that there have in technology especially towards the solar energy front.
The Barefoot College not only connects the communities in the rural area to professions, education water and solar however also helps them to not only take control of their lives but also to the communities and its well being.
The reason why they’re referred to as Solar mamas is due to the fact that the women who are trained from the Barefoot College, know how to assemble solar lamps as they get the necessary training for it. They also are trained to become solar engineers and can take on various kinds of responsibilities that include the management of solar batteries and panels, setting shops, building solar lanterns as well as perform various kinds of repairs on products that are both solar as well as electronic.
The tweet that was uploaded by Jackson stated that her experience was powerful and amazing as she not only got to see the iPads in action in the education front but also got to see the solar mamas.
