Oracle’s chairman and chief technical officer (CTO) Larry Ellison gave his speech in university of the South California last week. In his Commencement speech he spoke about his plan of acquiring Apple in mid‐1990. It was a bold plan which he discussed with his dear late friend Steve Jobs. He recalled having long walks way back in 1995 with Steve Jobs in Castle Rock State Park near Los Gatos.
Ellison said if there was anything which Steve wanted to talk about he would go on long walk with him discussing his longer term plans with him. He recalls of having long conversations about expanding his business and the future plans about Apple. During these walks he will also talk about their plans of gaining much control on Apple which he is currently out of. The main idea behind discussing the plans about the company was to expand.
It was very painful for them to see Apple declining. At that point of time way back in 1985, Apple’s net worth in market was around 5 billion in market. Ellison wanted to appoint Steve as the CEO of the company after acquiring the company. It could have easily happened if Steve has said yes however it never happened. Instead Ellison was told that Steve would acquire his company NeXT and put him as a CEO of his company. Steve was passionate about Apple and would have never sold Apple no matter what price was being offered to him.
Larry recalls a lot of old memories with his dear friend Steve. He recalls of having a lot of conversations with him about their business, technology, plans on how to acquire new markets, how to penetrate markets and possibly what could be done for making Apple the world’s best company. He still remembers all of those precious moments he has spent with Steve.
