The Bloomberg over the weekend had posted a report which was exclusive and spoke about China’s iPhone plant called Pegatron. Although the primary assembler of Apple’s Foxconn, the company had moved the assembly contracts of its iPhones in the recent years to Pegatron so that the supply chain can be diversified.
In the report, the description that Bloomberg had given about the factory shows about the workforce management and other details such as the use of automated systems to track the work hours and even how to tackle the various issues that the labours face such as overtime.
There are around 50,000 on floor employees and for the first time, the official press was allowed by Pegatron to photograph what is happening inside. The use of ID badges and face detection cameras is used by the Employees to unlock the turnstiles. There are also metal detectors that have to be passed by the employees so that they can be screened for any kind of equipment that can be used for photography. The reason behind this is the efforts that the company is putting in to prevent any kind of information leaks about their upcoming products such as the next release of iPhones.
The report also stated that the line‐up for the workers roll call starts at 9:20 AM. They also start the assembling of the phones on the conveyor belt of the factor 6 minutes later. The check ‐ in procedures which are automatic helps in prevention of overtime hours. This goes as per the regulations that are set by Apple for their suppliers. In the month of October there was a claim that was made by an external watchdog which stated that the majority workforce of Pegatron had a weekly work time of more than 60 hours. With the help of the ID badges, the company can track the time, lunch and wages expenses and other such useful information.
