An upcoming new featured was announced by Dropbox which carries the code name Project Infinite. When this feature is rolled out, the user will be able to take a look at all their folders and files that are stored on in the finder of Dropbox. Until it is needed, the space will not be taken by the files or folders. Presently the main target of the company with this new feature is for business users.
This also means that the storage size of the Dropbox will be bigger than the overall size of a person’s local disk. This would also include the instant access over the internet to any file on demand at any time.
Let us understand how this works
The app of the Dropbox shows all the files which are synced to the cloud via finder. Until they are opened and clicked on the content of the files cannot be downloaded. There is also a demo video that is available which explains everything. You would be out of luck if you need a particular file which is not cached locally and you do not have network access. However, the Project Infinite of Dropbox one of the features that would be included would be a Save local copy. If a person wants to pin specific files or folders the new feature will allow it and would be downloaded on the local system.
Also included in the placeholder would be metadata just like the actual files, like the dates they have been modified, the file names and even the size of the file. Not only can the placeholder folders and files be dragged and dropped, however the layout can be rearranged logically without the file contents being downloaded. The only solution until Infinite was to sync the specific folders by selecting them.
