This week, an official announcement was made by Intel that around 12,000 employees were being laid off by them. This might be a surprise for those who do not keep an eye on what is happening in the industry, however for quite some time now, the company had missed out on getting a chance for the Silicon Valley to be hit with the largest revolution which is move to mobile.
If you go back and take a look around all the popular devices like the android phones of Samsung, the iPad, iPhone or even the Fire tablet of Amazon, the one thing that is common in all of them is that Intel processors are not used by them. While there is no point arguing on the fact as to how Intel could miss out on such an opportunity, the fact of the matter is that is has missed it out and is now trying to make up for the ground that they have lost.
However, due to this, Apple is placed in a position that is peculiar due to the fact that most of the devices which are sold by the company are on the basis of chips which are designed by them. The Mac which is a product line that is longest running one relies on Intel.
This is not the first time that the company has been in this particular situation. Even in 2005, an unexpected announcement was made by the company when the company had decided to use Intel processors for their Macs and discard PowerPC line of chips of IBM which has been used since the mid 90’s. Long‐time users of Mac got shocked with this move and found that they were in a position that was inevitable even though in comparison to the Intel line‐ups which were increasingly impressive, the performance dwindled.
