This case against Apple and FBI has been in everyone’s mind since the beginning. According to recent reports, the latest comments regarding the case has been passed by the well‐known Edward Snowden. Recently, The Intercept had posted a video showing an interview with the man in question. This was taken during the conference held regarding civil liberties. According to Snowden, the claims FBI has put forward regarding the unlocking of the Apple iPhone is “bull sh*t”. He went on further into saying that FBI is fully capable of extracting the information out of the iPhone in question without any help from Apple.
The technology FBI possesses will actually allow them to extract the iPhone data directly from the iPhone main chip. Thus, FBI forcing Apple is completely uncalled for and wrong. Moreover, in an ACLU website post, Snowden had put the details of a physical process via which FBI can easily open up the phone and extract all the data by bypassing the iPhone security system.
According to the method mentioned, Apple’s auto erase security feature is mainly based on NAND type flash memory. The counter for the attempt on the pass code for Apple phones are present in this particular type memory location, which is also termed as the Effaceable Storage.
According to the report, if FBI wants to bypass the security of the iPhone, all they have to do is make a copy of the flash memory, since the Effaceable Storage is included in it, and then try. Once a backup has been made of the memory, one can simply keep trying as many times as they want. They only need to keep the backup of the NAND memory for replacing whenever they need. FBI can actually do this by extracting the iPhone chip and connecting it to any device which can read and copy the NAND file.
