In 2010, Apple had signed a deal so that they could use alloy liquid metal which was super strong. There were a lot of talks and speculations as to how the company was planning to use it. The most feasible answer that could be found was to use it with the tool for Sim Ejection which generally comes with iPhones.
Some speculations also stated that the company might be using the liquid metal for their casing of their products. However that speculation was ruled out considering the fact that the material costed a lot. While there were also talks that the company would also go ahead and use the material for batteries which were long lasting, but that was also ruled out eventually.
However we got to know that Apple has better use for the material apart from the Sim eject tools. While they were renewing the exclusive rights, the company had made a suggestion today pertaining on what it would be used for. It is believed that due to the fact that this material has a longevity and reliability, there are plans that the company may go ahead and use it for the iDevices buttons that are present on the physical body.
The argument of the conventional problems, the first thing is that manufacturing them is pretty difficult. There is a precision that is needed in order to get the feel that is needed. The second fact is that over time and constant use, they become less responsive and sometimes fail to get back to normal.
When you use liquid metal, both the problems are taken off. It is not sure if the same would be used for the Home buttons considering that they do last for a while. It will be a long wait before you start getting to see the iDevices that have the liquid metal in them.
