Encryption has been the trending topic for the past few weeks and with each passing day, new theories are coming out. Ted Olson who is Apple’s lawyer has made a strong statement regarding the case and it tells a lot about what is actually going on behind the scenes. From Apple’s perspective, privacy of the user’s information is everything and they are simply protecting their brand image. But we need to think logically here. By creating an unlock tool, Apple can help in fighting terrorism and government organizations will be massively benefitted from this. But in the process of doing this, they must also follow certain rules. When Apple devices are locked or they are inaccessible, unlock tools can retrieve information and supply them to the required government organizations. Every Apple executive knows this very well, but they are thinking of the society as a whole.
Tech giants like Apple, make a lot of money every year and their workforce is huge. But they have a responsibility to protect the open society, where information is shared seamlessly and the people feel protected. Any mishap can hurt their image badly and it is quite a big loss to them. This is the main reason this battle with the FBI is so huge, every step matters here, every move is important. Ted Olson also explained that FBI’s stand is wrong here and Apple can’t simply meet this demands. He termed it as “limitless” and said the government is demanding too much from Apple. So much so, he warned that such a destructive tool can give rise to bigger problems and create an Orwellian type society. People’s private information will never be safe again and everything from conversations, location to information will become vulnerable.
But he also made it clear that Apple is against terrorism and they will always support the government. He seemed very confident and so is Apple.
