Apple Pays $25 Million in Damage Claims

Apple gets another dent worth 25 million under settlement with Network‐1 Technologies a subsidiary unit of Mirror World Technologies. Apple infringed their patent dated back in 1999. Apple covered a system which could potentially store the documents in the chronological order. It was similar to the cover of the Apple appearing in Time Machine.

Apple Pays $25 Million in Damage Claims

According to the agreement signed between both the companies, Apple is said to be receiving the non‐exclusive full term license to the complete bunch of ‘227 Patent’ filed by the company which shall expire in the year 2016. On the other hand Apple will be paying a damage of 25 million in cash against the settlement as form of the fee for the patent. The patent describing the technology was developed on the basis of the work done by one of the computer scientist Professor from Yale University known by the name of David Gelernter and his student Dr. Eric Freeman who was also his graduate student in the year 1996. A long battle was fought with Apple, they were filed with the damages of $625 million however Apple won the case later and the case was somehow closed in the favor of the Apple by the law court.

In the year 2013, Mirror Worlds was acquired by Network‐1 and so were their patent by the company. Network‐1 claims to be broadly emerged into protection, licensing and development of the intellectual property and the technologies used under proprietary claims. Network‐1 has also settled with Microsoft was last year for the amount of $4.6 million.
